How To Do Your Own Lowlights And Highlights At Home

Coloring your hair at a salon can be both time-consuming and expensive. And, sometimes, you only need to color in a few pieces to maintain your highlights. Thankfully, there’s an easy way you can do this yourself at home.

What You’ll Need:

  • Hair color solution of your choice

Try L’Oreal Paris Superior Preference in Iced Golden Brown or use the color in Medium Chestnut Brown because it’s similar in shade. The kit already comes with an applicator bottle and conditioner.

  • Tinfoil

Cut the tinfoil into rectangular pieces long enough to cover the length of your hair. The tinfoil will prevent the newly colored parts of your hair from staining the other parts you wish to leave the same shade.

  • Comb with a tail
  • Old makeup brush
  • Gloves

Finding Your Highlight or Lowlight:

If you’ve never applied highlights or lowlights to your hair before, do a test strip on the underside of your head. Without continuing to the rest of your hair, allow it to sit for 30 minutes before washing and drying your hair. This way, you can check to see if the strip is the perfect highlight or lowlight to match your hair color.

Prepping Your Hair:

  • First, choose which parts of your hair you want to apply the colorant to. When doing highlights or lowlights, it’s best to take pieces of hair that are not directly next to each other to create some dimension and separation. If you’re only retouching the color, you should be able to see which parts need to be darker or lighter.
  • Next, take your comb and use its tail to separate your hair into sections. When coloring your hair or applying highlights/lowlights, it’s a good idea to start with the sections underneath. To do this, peel back a layer with the comb’s tail and move it to the other aside.

How to Color Your Hair:

  • Now you’ve got your hair prepped, put on your gloves and take a chunk of the hair you want to color first.
  • Lay the chunk of hair on the tinfoil.
  • Squeeze some hair color solution on the chunk of hair, then use your old makeup brush to spread it evenly, making sure the entire piece is covered.
  • Finally, wrap the tinfoil around the chunk of hair, folding it to keep it secure.
  • Repeat this process with all the parts of your hair you wish to color.
  • After coloring and wrapping your hair, allow the color to set in by leaving it alone for 30 minutes.

After Coloring Your Hair:

  • After waiting 30 minutes, wash your hair with the conditioner that comes with your L’Oreal Paris Superior Preference kit.
  • Apply Living Proof Perfect Hair Day to your damp hair.
  • Blow-dry your hair, styling with a brush as you go.
  • Apply Living Proof AMP Texture Volumizer, tilting your hair upside down to create more volume.
  • Set your hair with Kenra Volume Spray 25 for a long-lasting effect.

There you have it—beautifully colored hair done at home in less than an hour. This is proof that it doesn’t take a professional to achieve the perfect hair color you desire!
